Activity 4- Discuss how issues of ethics, society, culture and professional environments (including law, regulations and policy) are being addressed while you are taking action Word Count- 530 What are the facts? What do you feel about them? When we received the parent engagement surveys back there were some parents that mentioned negative comments about their child’s teacher, clearly identifying who they were in the survey and something they did not like about them. We did not expect this to happen and it forced us to think critically about what we needed to do. Why did it happen this way? How does this relate to your past experiences? We used the Ehrich et al. (2011) model as shown below. We needed to maintain professional ethics so the teachers who were mentioned in the parent engagement surveys were not identified, this was to ensure their mana and wairua stayed intact and that they did not feel targeted. There needed to be a decision about wh...

Activity 3- Examine how indigenous knowledge and cultural responsiveness are informing the way you are taking action

Activity 3- Examine how indigenous knowledge and cultural responsiveness are informing the way you are taking action Word Count- 516 What are the facts? What do you feel about them? Senior Managers have been currently looking at ways to increase parent engagement. There has been robust discussions on ways that we could gain engagement as the parent engagement surveys highlighted that parents are interested in knowing more about their child but do not have the time. We have had several classes trial and use Class Dojo and Facebook as online platforms to engage with parents. Many teachers have commented about the feedback and comments they have received on these forums as it gives them as teachers ways of communicating positively with parents, that is valid and easy to access. Parents are able to view student learning, student work or day to day activities (Kiwi Can, Sporting events) happening in the class or wider school (powhiri and teacher farewells). ...

Activity 2- Apply a reflective model to discuss something that has happened during your Inquiry so far and how it impacts on taking action Word Count- 576 What are the facts? What do you feel about them? ●        Parent Engagement surveys ●        Student Interviews ●        Parent Interviews I thought that when we received the Parent Engagement surveys back that they would reinforce my hunch, that parents were intimated by teachers hence why they had little or no contact with their child’s teacher and showed little interest of engaging. My role during the parent engagement surveys was to ensure each eldest and only student received a survey and analyse the results. The issues around parent engagement were addressed in the surveys as our Inquiry was based around this. After the parent engagement surveys were analysed, there was a clear picture that showed me tha...

Activity 1- Reflect on what you have done so far to take action Word Count- 568 Parent engagement is an issue that we have at our school. We have found through research that we need to ensure that parents feel valued and respected to make strong relationships. When this happens, parents feel more comfortable to come in to school and interact with their child’s learning. We are wanting parents to come into school and participate in digital hangarau sessions, so that they have a clear understanding of what this curriculum consists of and how they can support their tamariki at home. Joyce Epstein (2001) describes this stage as decision making and collaborating with community. We believe that this stage will bring many benefits not only for students but for parents and teachers. We also want to share learning on a regular basis through the use of Apps. We had outlined in our Action Plan that we would research online methods ways to engage parents in student l...
